The volume grew out of an earlier series in "Appleton's Journal", a magazine edited by Romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. Their packing facility was in the center of the valley with views of Mt. Shasta, Lassen Peak, and the Sutter Buttes, which were the landmarks the company used as their brand names.
